A Dutch honeymooner is lucky to be alive after falling off a 4,000-foot cliff called the “World’s End,” in Sri Lanka.
Mamitho Lendas, 35, is reportedly the first person to survive a fall from the tourist attraction. He was trying to take a photo of his new wife Saturday when he stepped backwards, slipped off the cliff and plummeted more than 100 feet below, Sky News reported.
Fortunately a tree broke Lendas’ fall about 130 feet down the cliff.
It took more than three hours for about 40 Sri Lankan troops-- using ropes and a military helicopter-- to pull Lendas to safety.
"It was very scary and very painful as well," Lendas told reporters. He said the waiting was difficult, but he suffered no major injuries in the incident.
"I sat in (a bush) for like three and a half hours... the longest three and a half hours of my life," Lendas said.
Sri Lankan army spokesman Brigadier Jayanath Jayaweera said Lendas was "extremely lucky" to survive and was the first person to survive a fall from World's End.
The World's End cliff is the main attraction at the Horton Plains nature reserve in central Sri Lanka.
