First it was just something funny. Petitioning to leave or secede from the United States. If these petitions on the White House website were to get into the low to mid 6 digits in signatures, it will stop being funny. Now it is a problem. It will not just be a problem for the White House. It is a problem for Congress, the Courts and the States.
For the White House it means that a significate number of people, in the states listed below, are against President Obama’s policies. Not the “yeah don’t your policies groupies” these are ones that want out!
Members of Congress, even those on the left, will have to take seriously what is happening in their states. They will begin polling and may move to save their jobs.
State government officials will have to take stock of what policies they are promoting and voice their concerns. Credit to the American Revolution could be laid to less than 3 to 6 percent of the people for and against at the start. But what if, looking at just a few states at 5 percent:
Louisiana 2,962,999 voters / 148,150 signers
South Carolina 2,875,601 voters / 143,780 signers
Texas 13 million voters / 650,000 signers
Could you imagine the thoughts running around in the heads of officials if 5 percent or more of the people in their state were to sign.
Typically we do not think the courts are affected by popular out cry. With a good percent of them ideologues, it may be a awake up call. These petitions could have an affect that has not been seen in a long time. If the numbers continue to climb the humor dissipates to massive problems.
Below is the list of each state that someone has posted a petition to cede or other from the United States. It list date created, title, link to petition, and number of signatures as of Monday, November 12, 2012 early afternoon. If a state has a second such as Georgia (1 or 2 is in parenthesis denoted the petition) is before “Created” date.http://teapartycheer.com/2012/11/13/list-of-states-citizens-wanting-to-secede-from-the-union/
